Pasha Akbar had found 4 postcards in the ruins of an ancient Persian fortress. The fortress was on an island in the Adriatic Sea. He was hired to do some reconstruction of the fortress by its new owners. A hotel chain had purchased the old fort and converting it into a luxury resort.

It had been weeks since Dela had thought about the four postcards Pasha Akbar had brought her. She opened her desk drawer and there they were. She remembered how troubling the thought of two lovers seperated by time and space had been. Solving the coded cards had only deepened their mystery.

Sparrow's last words to Lord Baltimore were: "I am dying of sadness that we shall never see each other again," brought a tear to Dela's eye. Dela had told her friends that she would try to rescue the two lovers, but other matters had occupied her mind and taken her time.

She might have spent more time thinking about the cards if the phone had not rung. Her old friend, Count Sydney, had just become a partner in the ownership of a resort on a Greek Isle. A series of strange events at the hotel gave him reason to ask Dela to come and investigate.
